In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5
This passage from John 1 deserves contemplation because it says so much! What does it tell us about Jesus? It says …
- Jesus is The Word – God chose Jesus as his messenger/Messiah to tell us about Himself. Jesus is God and the revealer of God the Father.
- Jesus has always existed — He was in the beginning with God
- Jesus is God
- Through Jesus all things were created
- Jesus gives life — without Him there is no life, physically or spiritually
- The life that Jesus gives is the light we live by
- When Jesus came in human form, He brought the light of God into the darkness of the world
- The light of Jesus is more powerful than darkness — He conquered the darkness on the cross and in His resurrection.
- There will come a day when Jesus returns and fills the world with light forever.
Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for creating this beautiful world and all the people I love. Thank You for creating me. Help me walk in Your light today and carry Your light into the darkness of this world. Amen.
