Read: Psalm 27
Reflect: By now the Christmas lights are up and twinkling, signaling the season at hand. Yes, many of the lights signify the secular celebrations of the season, but look at the first words of Psalm 27: “The Lord is my light and my salvation.” Jesus is the light. Intentionally or not, the lights at Christmas celebrate Him.
The Psalm goes on to chronicle David’s plight with his enemies. David outlines all the ways his enemies could get to him. It is obviously a great source of anxiety for him. How does he respond to the threats against him? His recurring answer as he laments his troubles is the Lord will be there for him.
As we come into this season of celebration, let us remember the reason. Jesus, the Light of the world, was born to save us. While our trials and tribulations may not be as serious as David’s, the truth David found is the same truth for us: the Lord will be there.
Jesus was born and placed in a lowly manger 2,000 years ago for us. He came and brought His light for us. The Lord was there for David, and He is here for us. As we gaze upon the sparkling displays of Christmas lights this year, let us remember the reason the lights adorn our homes. This Christmas and every day celebrate the Light. Celebrate Jesus.

Discuss: What anxiety or stress is weighing you down this holiday season? Let us seek the Lord’s face as David did and let go of what is keeping us from celebrating Jesus. How can we use celebrations that are considered more secular to reflect Jesus? What can we do to guide people to the true reason we celebrate Christmas?
Pray: Dear Lord, Thank you for coming to earth to save us. Thank you for leaving your throne on high for us. Help us this Christmas season to remember why we celebrate. When we see the beautiful lights, may we always think of You. Amen.
