I know I”m supposed to be raising my kids, but there are times that I think they are actually raising me. I think this is why Jesus says in Matthew 18:3 And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. I started thinking about this recently because of something my kids did at home.
It was bedtime and, as usual, when you are putting two young kids to bed it is usually pure chaos. I wouldn’t say bedtime is our finest hour. Listening ears seem to turn off, drama ensues and a tornado rips through the house. However, one particular night I was watching my daughter and I saw her fold her hands, whisper something, hold a coin to the wall and then step away. The coin stayed on the wall. I looked at her puzzled and she beamed at me. “I asked Jesus to put the coin on the wall.” She said it so sweetly. Then I saw her take the coin down and walk to another part of the wall. This time I heard her little voice say, “Jesus, please stick this coin to the wall.” Sure enough, it stuck again.
My husband and I looked at her, at the wall and shared a glance that said, “How is this happening?” I felt the wall. It wasn’t sticky. The coin. Her hand. And then a small little voice said to my heart, “Why don’t you think I can do it.”
Me: “Of course you can do it, Jesus. But, why would you spend your time doing this? I mean…”
Jesus: “Look at your daughter.”
Her face was the face of a girl who knew in her entire soul that Jesus could do anything. Anything. She wasn’t afraid to ask him to stick a coin to the wall. Think about that for a moment. When do we lose that? When do we stop wanting to believe that Jesus loves every little bit of our lives. Sometimes I fear we miss miracles, blessings and Jesus moments because we simply don’t expect to see them.
So, starting today I’m trying to get back that simple faith. The faith that doesn’t try to talk myself out of believing. I’m trying to remember that Jesus has it all. Every little bit of it. And, oh, how encouraging that is.
