Have you thought through your emergency preparedness plan when it comes to earthquakes? Don’t let it overwhelm you! Take it one step at a time and make sure your family is prepared should the big one rumble.
The Washington State Emergency Management Division recommends we are prepared to be on our own for at least 2 weeks. A home emergency kit will be invaluable if anything happens.
More guidelines on the best way to put together an emergency preparedness kit can be found from the American Red Cross and Ready.gov. You can also buy ready made kits from them as well. Other ready made kits can be found on Amazon,
It is important to think about your family and your pets. Don’t forget things like extra medication if someone in your family has a medical need, pads/tampons, fun stuff for kids (card games, books, etc…) and anything you may need for your furry friends as well. It’s the little things that are easily forgotten.
You may not have thought about whether or not you have earthquake insurance. Check with your insurance carrier and consider adding this to your home insurance as well.
Does your family have a specific emergency plan? Where will you meet up if something happens? Do you have someone out of state you can call should communication be hard in the area? Do you have kits at home as well as in your car?
